Presidio Park, San Diego, California 9/5/15

Last Saturday I met up with the San Diego Urban Sketchers at the Presidio, a tranquil, beautiful park above Old Town in San Diego.  It felt like being in a forest at the top.  This was my first time visiting this site.  I've seen this tower many times when driving on the freeway, so it was good to finally check it out.  This building houses the Junipero Serra Museum.  Interesting timing given the Pope is coming to the States soon and will bestow saint status upon Serra, the 18th century Catholic monk who established the California missions.  A museum brochure states that the museum stands atop the hill recognized as the site of the first permanent European settlement, a presidio, in what would become the State of California.  Prior to Spanish colonization, native Kumeyaay people had lived on and around the hill for millennia.  Thank you to Lydia Velarde who organized another great USk meet-up.  It's really cool how sketchers from all over the world can meet-up with the local sketchers group of wherever they're visiting.  On this day we had visiting sketchers from the Netherlands and Australia.

Presentation at Mesa College

In April, Lydia Velarde, San Diego USK Correspondent gave a presentation about the Art of Urban Sketching to Cindy Zimmerman’s Drawing Class at Mesa College, in San Diego. She spoke about the World Wide Group, the San Diego Local Chapter, showed some urban sketching tools and shared techniques for urban sketching. This talk was scheduled to prepare the students for urban sketching at an event they will be attending later in the week.

The San Diego Urban Sketchers Ride the Trolley April 2015

Trixxie's Trolley Trek

"Trixxies's Trolley Trek" started at the Santee Trolley Station. The San Diego Urban Sketchers hopped on the trolley for a short ride to the next stop where we got off, sketched for 15 minutes then jumped back on the trolley to the next station. We sketched at 4 different stops before returning to Santee. All of the sketches were done quickly, after the 2nd stop i realized I left my bag on the trolley, while it was on the way to downtown San Diego, I continued to sketch but with pen only. Thanks to a trolley flagger who radio'd the trolley I was lucky get my bag back with all my valuables still in it.

Spanish Village, Balboa Park

This sketch painting was created today at Spanish Village.  This is an area of Balboa Park, in San Diego where over 37 working art studios are located. The village has a colorful flagstone patio filled with seasonal blooms, and unique shops housed under the historic Spanish-tile roofed buildings. Balb oa Park is also the location of our 3rd Annual West Coast Urban Sketcher Sketch Crawl, August 7, 8, 9, 2015, information at http://3rdwcuskskcrawl.blogspot.com/

Westfield Mall Food Court, San Diego

The food court has changed.. A LOT. It seems to seat more people and has a little area that looks cozy with plants and nice chairs.

This is a snack stand I sketched while on an outing with the San Diego Sketch Crawlers.

Date Change for Fallbrook.

Due to the Fallbrook weekend weather forecast of 60% rain I have changed the meetup date for Myrtle Creek Botanical Garden and Nursery. Rather than wait until the night before or the morning of the event I have contacted the owner and he has agreed to the date of Sunday, January 18th. 10 am to 12 noon. I hope those that have rsvp'd can still make it on the 18th. Sorry!
